Foster Information

Thank you for opening your heart and home to a rescue animal!

Diamond in the Ruff is a 100% volunteer-run, foster-based rescue. Since we don’t operate a permanent facility, foster homes are essential to our mission. By fostering, you provide a safe and loving space for animals in need—giving them a second chance at life.

FAQs About Fostering

How long will I foster an animal?

There’s no set timeline. Some animals are adopted quickly, others take time. Patience and commitment are key. Fosters who attend events, share regular photos, and provide feedback often help animals get adopted faster.

Can I adopt my foster animal?

Yes! Many foster families fall in love and choose to adopt. If you’re considering this, email us at info@diamondpetrescue.org. Not sure? Try our one-week trial adoption to see if it’s the right fit.

Does fostering cost anything?

No. We provide necessary supplies and cover vet care. If you choose to donate supplies, we greatly appreciate it! Donations may be tax-deductible—consult your tax advisor.

Can I foster if I have children?

Absolutely. Fostering can teach kids compassion and responsibility. Adults must supervise all interactions between children and foster animals. If someone in your home is immune-compromised, consult your doctor before fostering.

Can I foster if I have pets?

Yes! Fostering can benefit both your pets and the foster animal. We ask that resident pets are vaccinated and that there’s no unsupervised contact until compatibility is clear.

What if I go on vacation?

We can help arrange a temporary foster. Just give us as much notice as possible. You may also use your regular pet sitter or boarding facility if proper waivers are signed.

What if fostering doesn’t work out?

We’ll always take our animals back. Please give us at least 72 hours’ notice so we can find a new foster home. Honest communication during the application process helps ensure a good match.

What if I get too attached?

It’s completely normal. Letting go is hard—but watching your foster thrive in a forever home is incredibly rewarding. Fostering saves lives. The joy of knowing you helped an animal find a future far outweighs the sadness of saying goodbye.
